Orchha Princely State

Well known for its architecture, Orchha was a Princely State during the British period surrounded by a beautiful forest. The palace of Orchha State stands magnificently showcasing its history and its struggle for survival. Long ago, this state stood as an independent Kingdom established by Bundela chief, Rudra Pratap Singh in 1501 AD.Orchha has a vibrant history and even its coinage is fascinating. The above shown silver Nazarana double rupee is one of the best examples to learn about Orchha's Coinage. This silver coin was minted during the reign of King Vikramajit Mahendra who ruled the state from 1796 to 1817 AD. During the reign, he introduced copper and silver coins in the denomination of Nazarana two Rupee, Rupee, and Paisa.
Its obverse depicts the King's name, title and Shah Alam II name are inscribed in Arabic script with Anno Hijri date which is read as ‘Sikka zad bar haft Kishwar saya fazal e Ilah, hami din Muhammad Shah Alam Badshah’. The reverse of this coin depicts Regnal date, mint mark, zarb, and Julus formula‘Zarb Orcha Sanah 24 Julus Mainamat Mainamat Manus’.
