Highlights at Coinex Pune 2018

The Coinex Pune annual exhibition of rare coins was held from 14th to 16th December at Sonal Hall on Karve Road. The event was inaugurated by a well-known archaeologist and coin collector, Dr. Anand Shroff. 35 stalls displayed coins and banknotes from various countries. Some of the highlights were a 2 kg coin, uniquely shaped coins, designed like a guitar and lion, and Beed currency that was issued 3,000 years ago. These coins were also offered for sale. One of the stalls was also selling banned Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes for Rs 25 and Rs 50, respectively.Senior coin collectors like Shriniwas Bhat, Daulat Johri and Veena Sarasan were given lifetime achievement awards for their contribution in numismatics. Three lectures were organised by The Oriental Numismatic Society, London and International Collectors’ Society of Rare Items. A special exhibition containing a collection of medals issued during World War I were also displayed, as 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the dreaded war’s end.
