The Sur dynasty ruled the northern parts of India from 1540 to 1556 AD. It was established by Sher Shah Suri. He supplanted the Mughal Dynasty during Humayun’s reign, establishing a dynasty which ruled for almost 17 years until the return of the Mughals.Ibrahim Shah was the fifth Sultan to rule the Sur dynasty from 1554 to 1555 AD. During the reign, he issued silver and copper coins from Agra and Banaras mint. The denominations were known as Rupee, Paisa and their different fractions.
Depicted here is a silver Rupee issued in reign from Dar al-zarb Muqam Shahr Banaras mint. This 10.51g silver Rupee was sold for INR 1,25,000 by Classical Numismatic Gallery in an auctioned held on 11th December 2015. The obverse of a coin depicts the legend ‘Abu al-Muzaffar Sayyid Sultan Ibrahim Ghazi’ within a rectangular border and names of the Rashidoon in margins. The reverse of a coin bore the legend ‘Khallada Allah Mulkahuwa Saltanahuwa 'Ala Amrahuwa Shaanahu’ in the rectangular border, and mint-name in the border area.
