Coinage of Sultan Muizz Al-Din Bahram Shah

Muizz al-Din Bahram Shah was a sixth Sultan to rule the Mamluk Dynasty from 1240 to 1242AD. He was a son of Sham al-Din Iltutmish and half brother of Razia Sultan. After Raziya Sultan’s overthrow at the hands of rebelling nobles, Bahram was raised to the throne with the title Muizz al-Din.During the reign he issued gold, silver, and billon coins in the denomination of Tanka and Jital. The bull and horseman type was struck again in his reign. Caliph al-Muntasir is also cited on his coins.
One of his silver Tanka of Hazrat Delhi mint was sold for INR 15,200 by Classical Numismatic Gallery. The obverse of the coin is inscribed with Persian legend ‘Al Sultan Al Azam Muiz Al Dunya Wa’L Din Abu’L Muzaffar Bahram Shah Bin Al Sultan’ in double square and ‘Nasir Amir-ul-Muminin’ in segments. The reverse of the coin is read as ‘Fi Ahad Al Imam Al-Muntasir Ameer-ul-Muminin’ in double line square.
