One of the most influential figures of the modern Punjabi literature, Bhai Vir Singh was born on 5th December 1872. He was a poet and theologian who played a major figure in the movement for the development and renewal of Punjabi literary tradition.Vir Singh’s family traces their origin from Diwan Kaura Mall Arora, who rose to the position of vice governor of Multan. His recognition with all the essential concerns of modern Sikhism was so complete that he came to be canonized as Bhai, the Brother of the Sikh Order, very early in his career.
With him begins the most modern Punjabi language; he gives it a new style, a new rhythm and a new flow. His poetical works are Rana Surat Singh, Dil Tarang, Tarel Tupke, Lehran De Har, Matak Hulare, Bijlian De Har and Mere Sayian Jio.
Many honors were conferred on him in recognition of his service. He was awarded with Sahitya Akademi Award in 1955 and Padma Bhushan Award in 1956. To honor him India Post has issued 20 Paisa Commemorative Postage stamp in 1972.
