World AIDS day

In 2006, India Post issued a commemorative stamp to acknowledge the World Aids Day. It is celebrated today on 1st December; it’s an occasion to introspect on what has been achieved and to focus on what more need to be done to stop the spread of HIV infection.The first detection of this infection in India was registered in 1986, the number of people effects till 2006 in India was 5.2 million, in sum 1% of the population. Indian has taken initiative to prevent and control AIDS right since 1986 when the National AIDS Committee was set up followed by the launch of the National AIDS Control Programme in 1987.
Future National AIDS Control Organization was constituted and the first phase of the National AIDS Control programme was launched in 1992. In the second phase which started in 1999, a number of policy initiatives were taken up which have focused on health education activities.
The notion behind issuing this stamp was our countries commitment to keep a check on the spread of this deadly disease and carry forward the message of combating AIDS, a critical issue to mankind which is engaging the attention of countries around the world.
