Philatelic Delights Offered at Cherrystone Dec Auction
2018-11-27 Tue
Cherrystone Philatelic Auctioneers will be offering a wide range of US and world stamps during their next auction on 4th and 5th December in New York.A complete set of the 1893 Columbian commemorative never-hinged single 2¢ and 30¢ stamps with full original gum, without any defects, is going to be offered. The set has an attached sheet margin with part of the printer’s inscription. They are well-centred and come along with a certificate from the Philatelic Foundation or Professional Stamp Experts. The item has a listed market value of $31,146 and is being offered for an opening bid of $14,000.
A block of four 4¢ blue error Colombian stamps is also going to be offered. The 4¢ stamp was supposed to be printed in ultramarine, but a few were printed in blue. The error was caused as a wrong batch of ink was used to print them. Further investigations suggest that blue inks used for both the error stamp and the 4¢ blue stamp have the same components. Experts believe that two panes are with collectors, while the others are lost. The never-hinged block has a straight edge on top and minor perforation separations. It has a listed market value of $150,000 and is being offered at a starting bid of $23,000.
Other offerings include George V. Shalimoff’s collections of Russia, M.C. Gilhausen’s Germany and colonies, and David Mace’s collections of China, Chinese provinces and foreign offices.
1916 ultramarine postage dues of Austria were overprinted in red with “POCZTA/POLSKA” to create the 1919 1-korona, 5k and 10k stamps. The offered stamps are tied on a piece with a black Krakow circular postmark.
A set of high-value Postage Dues from Poland is another highlight. Only 40 such 10kr stamps were printed along with 80 1kr and 5kr stamps. The item has a listed market value of $37,500 and is being offered at a starting bid of $15,000.
