2018-11-26 Mon
On 12th December, Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries is going to offer the Richard Drews collection of United States postage stamps that were issued between 1861 and 1868. The collection was built and studied over a period of 40 years and has also received many awards. One of the highlights is a used 1867 5¢ brown Thomas Jefferson stamp with an allover “A” grill. Only four stamps of this variety exist today and it is considered to be a key stamp to complete a collection of U.S stamps.
The stamp features Clear grill points, dark colour and great manuscript criss-crossed lines cancel. The perforations are much better than that of other existing examples. It also has small corner creases at the top right and tiny paper breaks at centre due to the combination of grill and manuscript. The stamp has a listed market value of $260,000.
An original-gum example of the 3¢ George Washington stamp with the pigeon blood pink shade is also going to be offered. A similar stamp was sold by Siegel in 1993. Less than 6 such stamps have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation so far. It has a listed market value of $50,000.
A used 24¢ lilac George Washington stamp with a Waterbury, Conn., Bridgeport Fireman fancy cancel is going to be offered at an estimated value of $5,000 to $7,000. Experts believe that it is rare to find a cancel mark like this one on the Washington stamp.
