Independence Day stamps of East Timor are primarily issued as symbols of national identity. This is the second set of stamps for East Timor which was issued at their independence in 2002.East Timor, officially the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, is a country in Southeast Asia. East Timor was a Portuguese colony, known as Portuguese Timor, until 28 November 1975. Stamps were being issued by Portuguese since the year 1884.
The first stamps of independent East Timor were issued on 20 May 2002 and were produced by Australia Post. These stamps depict symbols familiar to the East Timorese people. The 2c stamp depicted Traditional crocodile and the 50c stamps show Ceremonial grass wreaths. A farmer harvesting of coffee – the national crop of the country is the theme of the USD 1 stamp while the USD2 stamp features the young man holding the national flag of the country.
It is an excellent example of international co-operation as it was produced and sold in Australia by Australia Post. The language on the stamps is Portuguese, the country’s official language. Denominations are in United States currency.
