Rio Muni and the First Stamp Issue

Rio Muni is the Continental Region of Equatorial Guinea. The name is derived from the Muni River. Río Muni was ceded by Portugal to Spain in 1778. Stamps for Río Muni were issued by Spain.The first stamps of Rio Muni were issued on 27 April 1960. The first definitive series consisted of nine values 25 Spanish centimos to 10 Spanish pesetas. The stamps feature a missionary and a native boy reading a book. The stamps are inscribed with “RIO MUNI CORREOS” at the bottom and the denomination at the top left corner over the boy’s head.
The design of the stamps of Rio Muni is bold, simple and austere, reflecting a noble restraint and tasteful pride.
