The princely state of Kotah lay in the south-east of Rajputana. The state was once a part of the Rajput kingdom of Bundi but became a separate princely state in the 17th century. The ruler, or Maharao, was a Chauhan Rajput. During the years of Maratha ascendancy, Kotah fell on hard times especially from the depredations of Holkar. In 1817 the State came under a treaty with the British.Umed Singh II was a ruling Maharaja of Kotah Princely State from 1889 to 1935 AD. He was served as an advisor to leading government officials and sent his troops to fight in both the First and Second World War.
Umed Singh issued gold and silver coins from Nandgaon mint. These coins were found in the denomination of Nazarana Rupee, Mohur, and Rupee. One of his gold Nazarana Rupee was sold for INR 10,00,000 by Todyywalla Auctions.
The obverse of coins showed the Persian legend which read as ‘Mallika-e-Muazzima Inglistan Badshah Zaman’. The reverse of a coin depicts with legend ‘Sanah 15 Julus Mainamat Manus Zarb Kotah Urf Nandgaon’ with Flower and leaf Mint mark.
