Stack’s Bowers Galleries offered the Archangel Collection of Colonial Coins and fine examples of 1792 Coinage during the Baltimore Expo auctions in October. One of the highlights was a 1788 Massachusetts cent graded PCGS MS 65 brown which was sold for $24,000. The chocolate brown coin is very well struck and features a strong lustre with hard frosty surfaces on the obverse as well as the reverse.
Massachusetts issued copper cents and half cents in 1787 and 1788. They were the first coins which officially bore the denomination “cent”. The obverse features a standing Indian while the reverse features a flying eagle. The detailing of the Indian’s tunic and the eagle are very fine. It belonged to the David Spence Collection and was sold to the consigner in March 1975.
