Birth anniversary of the 22nd and 24th US President

2016-03-18 Fri

Grover Cleveland (1837-1908), who served as the 22nd and 24th U.S. president, was born on 18th March 1837 in Caldwell, New Jersey, U.S.

He is the only president to have served two non-consecutive terms, and also the only Democratic president to win the election during the period of Republican domination. He was a known political reformer and worked as a lawyer, the mayor of Buffalo, New York, and Governor to the New York State before assuming presidency in 1885.

A 12 cents U. S. postage stamp was issued in 1923 to honour Cleveland. Later, two more stamps were issued in 1938 and 1986. Cleveland's portrait appears on the U.S. $1000 bill of series 1928 and series 1934. He also appeared on the first few issues of the $20 Federal Reserve Notes from 1914. Since he was both the 22nd and 24th president, he was featured on two separate dollar coins released in 2012 as part of the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005.
