Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay- A social reformer and freedom fighter of India was breathed her last on 29 October 1988. She was a remarkable woman of many passions and gifts. She set up some of the first national institutions to archive, protect, and promote Indian dance, drama, art, puppetry, music, and handicrafts.Born on 3rd April 1903 in Mangalore, Chattopadhyay gradually emerged as one of the few feminist freedom fighters the country has seen. She was one of the most prominent figures of the freedom struggle movement. In 1923 she returned to India from London to join the Seve Dal, a Gandhian organization set up to promote social upliftment.
For her numerous contributions to India, she was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1966, Padma Bhushan in 1955 and Padma Vibhushan in 1987. besides this, in 1974, she was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship the highest honour conferred by the Sangeet Natak Akademi.
On 29th October 1991, India post has issued the first-day cover features a portrait of Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay.
