Canada Post remembers the 100th anniversary of the truce that ended World War I with a new stamp issued on 24th October. This stamp celebrates the silencing of the guns and commemorates those who fought and died for peace. At 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918 — “the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month” — a ceasefire was initiated between the Allies and Germany. Of the more than 650,000 Canadians who served with the Allies, 66,000 were killed and 172,000 wounded.
Designed by Larry Burke and Anna Stredulinsky and illustrated by Jillian Ditner a permanent stamp was issued which has the domestic letter rate of 85¢. The words “ARMISTICE” along with the years 1918 – 2018 are inscribed on top right corner and the name of the country with its state emblem is seen at the bottom right corner.
The stamp depicts a bird hovering over barbed wire against a desolate backdrop which serves as a poignant metaphor for the return of peace to a war-torn world.
