Canada’s Armistice Postage Stamp

Canada Post remembers the 100th anniversary of Armistice that ended World War I. A new stamp was released on 24th October to celebrate the end of a brutal war and remember those brave soldiers who lost their lives during the war. The stamp features a dove flying over a barbed wire indicating the return of peace after a deadly war. The booklet, pane of five and official first-day cover feature photos of the celebrations in 1918. A photo of celebrations at Bay and King streets in Toronto is shown on the selvage of the pane of five.The stamp was designed by Larry Burke and Anna Stredulinsky of Burke & Burke while Jillian Ditner illustrated it. 250,000 booklets and 40,000 panes were printed in Lowe-Martin using four-colour offset lithography. Symbolic doves in cyan, magenta, yellow and black colours are depicted in the selvage of the pane of five and the booklet pane. The barbed wire is highlighted with a spot varnish special effect. The FDC has an Ottawa cancel with a poppy.
The war ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. Over 650,000 Canadians fought for the Allies against Germany, out of whom, 66,000 sacrificed their lives.
