Sudan, also known as North Sudan since South Sudan's independence, is a country in Northeast Africa. The country's place name Sudan is a name given to a geographical region to the south of the Sahara, stretching from Western Africa to eastern Central Africa. The name derives from the Arabic “Bilad as-Sudan”, or "the lands of the Blacks".The Sudanese pound is the currency of Sudan. It was also used as currency in South Sudan until the finalization of the introduction of the South Sudanese pound. Both Arabic and English names for the denominations appear on the country's banknotes and coins.
Today we are looking at a 1983 25 Piastres banknote. The note specifications are as follows:
The obverse has the portrait of President Gaafar Muhammad an-Nimeiry (Jaafar Nimeiry, Gaafar Nimeiry, Ga'far Muhammad an-Numayri, Jafar Muhammad an-Numeiri) wearing a native headdress to the left and the Coat of Arms depicting outline map of Sudan, along with the Secretary Bird and a snake, Roselle flowers (Hibiscus sabdariffa).
The reverse has the Emblem of Sudan (1969) depicting Secretary Bird (Sagittarius serpentarius) bearing a shield. Kosti Bridge (Kusti) across White Nile River in Rabak. This predominantly Red-orange coloured has the Signature: Elsaikh Hassan Belial (Governor).
