The third session of Joel Anderson Collection of Paper Money Sale will be conducted on 25th October by Stack’s and Bowers. One of the highlights during the sale would be the 1890 $1000 Treasury Note, graded PCGS Currency About New 50 with serial number A13343*. It has a large seal along with signatures of Rosecrans and Huston. It’s the finest known example of the popular “Grand Watermelon” variety. The obverse features a portrait of Union Major General George Meade. Meade dedicated his life for the defense, preservation and restoration of the US. He was in command of the Army of the Potomac and served as a soldier until 6th November 1872. He was also the governor of the Third Military District. It was under his supervision that Georgia, Florida, and Alabama were reconstructed after the war.
The note’s green-coloured reverse features a large-sized 1000. The zeros contain watermelon-like stripes, due to which the note got its nickname – “Grand Watermelon”. The offered note was a part of collections by F.C.C. Boyd, Robert Friedberg, and Amon Carter, Jr. It was sold for $1,092,500 in October 2005 during Lyn Knight sale. It is currently being offered at an estimated value of $1.25 million to $1.75 million.
