Vidyasagar Setu was inaugurated

Another bridge overlooking the beauty of Hooghly River and enchanting the charm of Kolkata, Vidyasagar Setu, also known as Second Hooghly Bridge, was inaugurated on October 10, 1992.Named after the 19th century Bengali polymath Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, it is one of the longest bridges in Asia. Construction of the bridge started in 1978 and was completed in 1992. Vidyasagar Setu was finally commissioned in October 1992 and opened to public thereafter.
The bridge spans for over 457 m in length and is around 35 m wide. This cable-styled bridge has 121 cables in a fan-like arrangement that have been built using steel pylons that are around 127.6 m high.
It is one of the most prominent bridges in eastern India and is known for its architectural splendor. If you love long drives, it is one of the best places to enjoy the same, especially late at night. A trip to Vidyasagar Setu not only reflects the thrilling view of the bridge and the river but also shows the mingling of innovation and heritage.
A commemorative stamp was issued by India Post on 2007.
