UNPA to Release Diwali Stamps

A pane of 10 stamps and labels celebrating the popular Hindu Festival of Diwali will be released by the UNPA on 19th October. The $1.15 stamps can be used from the UN post office in New York City.Two stamp designs are a part of the pane. They feature differed photos of Diya or oil lamps. The labels depict a symbolic representation of the lamp with backgrounds in different colours. The big selvage area depicts a photo of the UN headquarters shot at night. The building is decorated with lights showing the message of “Happy Diwali” and an image of a symbolic diya.
The festival of lights is celebrated by various communities not only in India bur worldwide as well. These communities follow different faiths and the festival has a unique significance for each of these religions. During these 5-day long celebrations, people exchange gifts, light lamps, burst crackers and prepare sweets to celebrate the victory of good over evil. Diwali or Deepawali is also considered as a new year by many communities.
Diwali falls on 7th November this year and the date keeps on varying every year depending on the Hindu calendar.
