Mickey and Minnie as “The Little Mermaid”
2018-10-05 Fri
Didn’t we all love Ariel, the beautiful red haired Little Mermaid? "The Little Mermaid" (Danish: Den lille havfrue) is a fairy tale written by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen about a young mermaid who is willing to give up her life in the sea and her identity as a mermaid to gain a human soul. But not all wishes go as planned even in the fairy tale world. The story goes like this- Ursula, the sea witch, makes a devious deal with princess Ariel for her to meet Eric, the human prince she loves. Unaware of her intentions and carried away in love, Ariel lands up in major trouble and ends up sacrificing herself for her love.
The tale was first published in 1837 and has been adapted to various media, including musical theatre, anime and a Disney animated film.
But here’s what is of great interest: Walt Disney and his early artists/workers have “adopted” some of these fairy tales into stories of Mickey and his friends!
Grenada Post has contributed several sets of stamps themed with Hans Christian Andersen's stories, starring Mickey and the gang. The stamp shown alongside is of 1.50 Dollars and features Minnie has the Little Mermaid and Mickey as the (statue) of Prince. Isn’t it cute?
Well, do you have it in your collection? If not go...buy it from “Up where they walk, up where they run, / Up where they stay all day in the sun, / Wanderin’ free. Wish I could be / Part of that world."
