Gold Tanka of Bahamani Sultanate

The Bahmani Sultanate was established in 1347 by a Turkish general named Alauddin Bahman Shah, who had revolted against Mohammed bin Tughlaq of the Delhi Sultanate. It was one of the great medieval kingdoms which were formed on the Deccan region of South India.Nizam Al-Din Ahmad Shah III ruled Bahamani Sultanate form 1461 till 1463 AD. He issued coins in gold and copper in the denomination of Tanka and Gani and their different fractions. Copper coins are of four types, all with different Arabic legends. Gold coins issued by him are extremely rare.
Depicted here is a beautiful gold Tanka issued by him. This coin is sold for INR 2,10,000 by Classical Numismatic Gallery. The obverse of coin depicted the Arabic legend in four line ‘al-WathiqBillah al-Ghani Abu al- Muzaffar Nizam al-Duniyawa al-Din’. The reverse of coin bore the legend ‘Ahmad Shah bin Humayu shah’ within a rectangular border and ‘al-Sultan al-Bahamani’ traces of mint-name in borders.
