Belarus to Introduce New Banknotes with Modified Designs
2018-09-28 Fri
Belarus is going to introduce new banknotes in 2019-2020. The main design elements, colour and size would remain the same. The decision has been taken to make necessary adjustments to the nominal structure and improve cash flow. The architectural structures found on the notes would be closer to the actual appearance and the name of these structures will also be mentioned. The proprietary "Starishyna Pralylennya" and signature of the Chairman of the Board of the National Bank of Prokopovich PP will be removed. New rules of Belarusian spelling and punctuation will be applied on a 50-ruble note, and the earlier inscription will be replaced by "PYAZJDZYAT". 5 and 10 rubles notes will feature year date 2019 while 20 and 50 rubles notes will feature the year date 2020.
People will be allowed to exchange banknotes of 2000 series for those from 2009 series till 31st December 2021. Banknotes from the 2009 series will remain legal tender. The new notes will have the latest security features and citizens will be able to easily differentiate between original and fake banknotes without using special equipment. The National Bank is currently in the process of choosing the right manufacturer. Detailed information about the new notes would be revealed at a later stage.
Currently, Belarus circulates banknotes in seven denominations namely, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 rubles. Banknotes of smaller denominations get worn-out easily, due to which they need to be replaced more frequently. From October 2017, the number of worn-out 5 ruble banknotes tripled while that of 10 rubles banknotes doubled.
