The Jaunpur Sultanate was ruled by Sharqi dynasty. Khwajah-i-Jahan Malik Sarwar, the first ruler of the dynasty, was a Wazir (minister) under Sultan Nasiruddin Muhammad Shah (1390–1394 AD). In 1394, he established himself as an independent ruler of Jaunpur. Husain Shah was the last Sultan of Jaunpur Sultanate, holding the position from 1458 to 1479 AD.Husain Shah issued beautiful gold, silver, copper, and billon coins during the reign. These coins are found in the denomination of Tanka, Half Tanka, Falus, Half Falus, and Double Falus. Legend inscribed on these coins is in beautiful ‘Tughra’ calligraphy. Billon coins issued by him weigh around 10.3g. This is heavier than the issue of the previous ruler. The metal in these billon coins is more coppery.
Depicted here is a ‘fi Zaman’ type gold Tanka issued by him. The obverse of a coin is inscribed with legend in tughra calligraphy ‘Al Muyaad Bi Tayid Allah Husain Shah Bin Mahmud Shah Bin Ibrahim Shah Khallada Allah’ and reverse of the coins is depicted as ‘Fi Zaman Al-Imam Naib Amir Ul Mominin Abul Fath Khulidat Khilafatahu’.
