Medusa Featured on Latest Coin from Mythical Creatures Series

Pobjoy Mint released the fourth coin in its Mythical Creatures series of £4 coins. This one features the snake-headed Gorgon – Medusa. The series comprises of five 2-ounce .999 fine silver coins, each of which depicts characters from world-famous myths. Each coin is struck in High Relief and is processed manually to achieve an antique finish. The latest coin in the series is issued for British Indian Ocean Territory.As per the Legend, Medusa was a beautiful young lady with long hair who attracted many suitors. Before getting married, Neptune found her in the temple of Athena and seized her by force. An angry Athena turned Medusa’s beautiful hair into viscous snakes and gave her a boon to turn anyone who looked directly at her, into stone.
The reverse features Medusa and the figures that have been transformed into stones. Neptune’s trident is also depicted in the background. The snakes on Medusa’s head are beautifully highlighted using high relief and antique finish effects.
Like all other coins in the series, The 50 grams coin has a diameter of 62.21 millimetres and a mintage limit of 650 pieces. The last coin in the series will depict the Centaur.
