100th Anniversary of Scott Christian College Celebrated on Postage Stamps

India post had released a commemorative 5 rupees stamp on 28th June 2018 featuring the Scott Christian College in Nagercoil. A total of 600700 stamps were printed using the Wet Offset technique at Security Printing Press in Hyderabad.Scott Christian College was established as a village Church in 1809 by Rev. William Tobias Ringeltaube from London Missionary Society at Mylaude. It was turned into a Seminary in 1818 by Rev. Charles Mead and shifted to Nagercoil. In 1860, Rev. Dr. James Duthie was in-charge of the seminary and played a pivotal role in converting it into a college over the years. Mr. Septimus Scott donated 1000 pounds and Government of Travancore also released grants to turn it into a Second Grade college affiliated to the University of Madras in 1893.
The first batch comprised of 12 students when Rev. Dr. James Duthie was the principal in 1924. The library contained almost 4000 books. Sh. GH. Marsden became the principal in 1927. He focussed on Science stream and also established an intermediate college with 140 students. From this year onwards, women were allowed to take admission and compulsory games were introduced for men. In 1950, degree courses were introduced and post-graduate courses were introduced in 1971. Today it is an autonomous institution with 11 centres of research and 74 approved research guides.
It is a great way to celebrate the 100th anniversary of this reputed educational institution with the release of a postage stamp.
