Silver Tanka of Shams al-Din Iltutmish

Iltutmish was the ruler of the Delhi Sultanate who ruled the dynasty from 1211 to 1236 AD. He was one of the slaves of Qutb-ud-din Aibak who later became his Son-in-Law. He conquered Multan and Bengal from contesting rulers, and Ranthambhore and Siwalik from their rulers.Coinage system under Iltutmish possessed some distinctive features. Iltutmish introduced the silver Tanka and the copper Jital-the two basic coins of the Sultanate period, with a standard weight of 175 grains.
One of his Silver Tanka listed at Classical Numismatic Gallery at 12,000-15,000. The obverse of this coin inscribed with Arabic legend ‘al-Sultan al-'Azam Shams al-Dunyawa al-Din Abu al-Muzaffar Iltutmish al-Sultan in double square and date and taxation details in margin. The reverse of a coin depicts the ‘Fi Ahd al-Imam al-Mustansir Amir al-Mumineen’ in double-lined rectangle; mint details in margins.
