C.N. Annadurai, fondly called Anna by millions of Tamilians, was one of the most charismatic leaders of modern India. One of the founders of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. He was born today, on 15th September 1909.Member of a weaving caste family in Kanchipuram, Annadurai secured his Bachelor’s degree in Arts and Master’s degree in economics and Politics. Annadurai rose to become a school teacher and journalist before switching into hard-core politics.
In 1967, C.N. Annadurai became the chief minister of Madras state, when his party, the DMK, swept to power for the first time.
Anna offers a warm and rounded portrait of a man who showed the way for the democratic expression of regional aspirations within a united India. He passed away on 3rd February 1969, due to his passing, the country lost a great patriot and leader.
As a tribute to his memory, Indian post has issued 20 Paisa commemorative postage stamps. The design of the stamp depicts the autographed portrait of Anna.
