Malwa Sultan Ala-Al-Din Mahmud Shah’s I Silver Tanka

Ala-Al-Din Mahmud Shah I ruled the Malwa Sultanate from 1436 CE till 1469 CE. He came to the throne after the death of his father Muhammad I.Ala-Al Din Mahmud Shah I issued coins in three metals gold, silver and billon. One of the most amazing thing about his coinage is he issued gold 5 tanka which weighs around 55.4g, he must have struck this coin for a special occasion. Most of his coins were minted in ‘Hadrat Shadiabad’.
Silver coins issued by him bear ‘Sikandar Al Thani’ legend. These coins are two varieties one in which obverse legend are in plane surface and reverse legend is within the circle, and other in which both the legend is within a double square.
This silver Tanka was issued by him from the mint ‘Hadrat Shadiabad’. The obverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Al-Sultan al-Azam Ala al-Dunyawa al-Din Abu al-Muzaffar Mahmud Shah Khalji Khallada Allah Khilafatahu’. The reverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Sikandar al-Thani Yameen al-Khilafah Nasir Amir al-Mumineen’ within the circle mint name and Hijri year written in a border.
