Glow worm stamps of New Zealand
2018-09-04 Tue
We are all very attracted to ‘glow in dark’ things. Did you know that there are worms that glow too? Yes. You read it right. In New Zealand there are The Waitomo Glowworm Caves that attract a lot of tourists. This place is a cave at Waitomo on the North Island of New Zealand. It is known for its population of Arachnocampa luminosa, a glowworm species found exclusively in New Zealand. To commemorate such fascinating creatures on stamp, New Zealand had issued four stamps picturing these glow worms glowing in the dark. These stamps too glow in the dark after being exposed to sufficient amount of sunlight.
The photographs reproduced on the stamps were taken by Joseph Michael, part of his series called Luminosity. The photographs shown on the stamps designed by Hannah Stancliffe-White are of the following caves: Mangawhitikau, 80¢; Nikau, $1.40; Ruakuri, $2; and Waipu, $2.50.
Quite interesting, isn’t it?
