Pobjoy Mint released copper-nickel dollar and a Proof .925 fine silver $10 coin featuring a ship named Ark Raleigh to observe the 400th death anniversary of English writer, poet, courtier and explorer Sir Walter Raleigh. Constructed by Raleigh himself, the ship featured his portrait as well.Raleigh served the court under Queen Elizabeth I from 1579 to 1583 and instantly became popular. In return, he received a large estate in Ireland, trade privileges and a knighthood as rewards. He served the highest office at court when he became the captain of the Queen’s Guard in 1586.
Since Raleigh had a Royal patent to explore the New World, he played a very important role in colonizing North America. When he came to know about the City of Gold El Dorado, he undertook two voyages. Finally, he discovered the northern coast of South America and the Caribbean Sea. He brought potatoes and tobacco on his way back, both of which were unknown in Europe until then.
Both coins weigh 28.28 grams; they have a diameter of 38.6 millimetres and an obverse design featuring Queen Elizabeth II. The copper-nickel dollar has a mintage limit of 10,000 pieces and can be bought for $16.95 each while the silver $10 coin has a mintage limit of 2,000 pieces and can be purchased for $65 each.
