Highlights at Stack’s Bowers Galleries ANA Auction

Several United States Treasury Bonds from the John E. Herzog Collection were sold for a total of $650,000 on 14th August by Stack’s Bowers galleries at The ANA World’s Fair of Money in Philadelphia.Obverse and reverse proofs of a $5,000 interest-bearing note, graded New 62 by PCGS Currency was sold for $48,000. An uncut sheet of 1899 $1 silver certificates with serial numbers 1-4, graded AU 50 Exceptional Paper Quality by PMG, was sold for $180,000. This recently discovered sheet was the first one to be printed with a Lyons-Treat signature combination and was auctioned for a value three times more than its estimated price.
A $100 national banknote from Winters National Bank in Dayton, Ohio, with a mismatched serial number error was sold for $18,000. A $5 note from the first national bank of Ketchikan, graded PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ *, crossed its estimated value of $70,000 and was sold for $90,000. It is the finest small-size Alaska Territory national. A 1928 $500 gold certificate, graded PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ was auctioned for $96,000. The same note was sold for $97,750 in 2008. A Czechoslovakian 500-korun note of 1923, graded PMG AU-55 was sold for $40,800 against an initial estimate of $7,000 to $10,000.
