Two Rare Victoria Stamps Auctioned
2018-09-01 Sat
Spink USA auctioned two black Queen Victoria stamps of Great Britain and Canada during the Philatelic Collector’s series auction on 12th and 13th September in New York.Canada’s 1851 12-penny black Queen Victoria stamp on laid paper is one of the most sought-after British Commonwealth issues. The offered stamp was in a condition as compared to the few other existing examples. It has four large margins with a part of the stamp above it on the sheet. The cancellation is also on target without disturbing the design majorly. It was once a part of Alfred H. Caspary’s (1877-1955) collection. These stamps in used condition have a listed market value of $135,000. However, it is difficult to predict the stamp’s value.
An unused example of Great Britain’s 1840 1d black Queen Victoria Official stamp with original gum was also offered at the auction. This stamp has a listed market value of $35,000. The offered stamp has large margins, looks fresh and has a strong colour. Its design is similar to the 1840 Penny Black but letters “V” and “R” are present on upper corners instead of a Maltese cross.
