Henry Hudson, discovers and explores Delaware Bay
2018-08-28 Tue
Considered one of the world’s famous explorers, Henry Hudson was born in England circa 1565. He spent his career searching for different routes to Asia, but he ended up opening the door to further exploration and settlement of North America. In 1607 and 1608, Hudson made two attempts on behalf of English merchants to find a rumoured Northeast Passage to Cathay (present-day China) via a route above the Arctic Circle. In 1609 he landed in North America and explored the region around the modern New York metropolitan area, looking for a Northwest Passage to Asia on behalf of the Dutch East India Company.
Henry Hudson sailed into the Delaware Bay on August 28, 1609. Besides this, he sailed up the Hudson River, which was later named for him, and thereby laid the foundation for Dutch colonization of the region. While many places bear his name, Henry Hudson remains an elusive figure.
To honour this great explorer 7 1/12 Pence stamp was issued in 1972.
