Highly Graded 1923-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar Sold for $27,812
2018-08-17 Fri
Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty Half dollar of 1916 to 1947 is so popular that its obverse design was used again for the 1986 American Eagle silver bullion program. A gold .999 fine version was also issued in 2016 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the design. The 1923-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar has a high mintage of two million. However, their population is scarce when it comes to grades higher than Extremely Fine. Examples in Mint State grades of these coins are rare.
Most coins are weakly struck like other half dollars that were struck by San Francisco Mint during that time. Only seven such coins are graded PCGS MS-66, two coins are graded MS-66+ and only 1 coin is graded MS-67.
A similar coin, graded PCGS MS-66 was offered with a green CAC sticker by GreatCollections auction on 29th July for $27,812.25. This coin featured a light lilac toning. An example with similar grading but deeper toning was sold for $26,400 by Heritage Auctions in January at Florida United Numismatists auction.
