Copper coin of Chola

Sangama period is connected with the ancient Cholas. The first reference of this dynasty was found from the Ashoka’s rock edicts. Not many coins from this period come to light. All the Ancient Chola coins so far discovered are in copper. The dynastic symbol of Chola’s remained tiger since ancient time.This above-shown uninscribed copper coin of the Cholas chiefs belongs to the Sangam period of approximately 50 to 100 AD. It is a very fine and rare specimen and weighs around 2.42 grams. The obverse of this coin illustrates an elephant walking towards left with a royal umbrella above it followed by a horse. The reverse of this coin depicts a curled-tailed tiger facing left within a line border.
