2018-08-06 Mon
Though the first commemorative Greenland stamps appeared in early 1945, they were not actually produced in Denmark or in Greenland. Hence the stamps which were issued in the year 1957 are considered to be the first commemorative stamps of Greenland which feature the Inuit (Eskimo) Legends.Inuit religion is the shared spiritual beliefs and practices of Inuit, an indigenous people from Alaska, Canada, and Greenland. Their religion shares many similarities with religions of other North Polar people. Their classical myths and legends were depicted on a set of five stamps issued between the years 1957 and 1969.
Greenland’s very first commemorative stamp was issued in the year 1957 which feature the scene from the Mother of the Sea. The 60 Ore Blue stamp depicts Sedna – the goddess of the sea and marine animals sitting on shore along with marine animals.
The stamp was designed by Jens Rosing – the extremely versatile designer of the Greenland who was expert in handling images of people, animals and numerous other subjects.
