Women's Right to Vote Celebrated on Canadian Coin

2016-03-09 Wed

Canadian women won the right to vote in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta provincial elections hundred years back. To celebrate this occasion, the Royal Canadian Mint has released a special one-dollar circulation coin.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Finance Minister Bill Morneau unveiled the coin on International Women’s Day that was celebrated worldwide on Tuesday.

“Canadians from coast to coast to coast should look for this coin and collect it as a reminder that equality endures as a fundamental value of Canadian society,” said Morneau.

The coin features a depiction of woman and child, with the woman casting a ballot as the child looks on, set in the 1916-era, designed by artist Laurie McGaw.
