Shri Aurobindo Ghose was born on 15 August 1871, at Calcutta in Bengal in a reputed family of Konnagar. He was a great Indian Philosopher, yogi, spiritual guru, poet, and nationalist. At a very young age he was sent to England for education, so he completed his basic as well as higher education from the United Kingdom. Sri Aurobindo was one of the pioneers of political awakening in India; He was also a prophet of Indian Nationalism.In the year 1893, he came to India and started working in Baroda Education Service. In Baroda, he spent his several years serving as a teacher, secretary to the Maharaja of Gaekwad and Vice Principal of Baroda College. From the year 1902 to 1910 he started his struggle to free Indian from British’s. He had also participated in Indian National Congress annual session headed by Dadabhai Naoroji. In the year 1907, he started his daily newspaper Bande Mataram.
This 2 Rupee commemorative coin was issued by Indian Government in the year 1998. The obverse of this coin depicts the portrait of ‘Sri Aurobindo’ in the centre, with the legend ‘SRI AUROBINDO’ written in both ‘Devanagari’ and ‘Roman’ in the upper half of the periphery, with the slogan ‘Sampurna Jiwan Yoga Hai’ in Devanagari and ‘All Life is Yoga’ in Roman in the lower half of the periphery. The reverse of the coin depicts ‘Ashoka’s Lion’ with the inscription ‘SATYAMEVA JAYATE’ and denomination 2, The Inscription ‘INDIA RUPEES’ is written in Roman to the right and ‘BHARAT RUPAYE’ written in Devanagari to left.
A proof and uncirculated coins' set consisting of 2 rupees, 10 Rupee, 50 Rupee and 100 Rupee were also issued.
