Half Groschen Stamp of the State of Hannover
2018-08-02 Thu
Half Groschen Stamp of the State of Hannover is one of the most beautiful and interesting stamps of Germany.Hanover or Hannover, situated on the River Leine, is the capital and largest city of the German state of Lower Saxony. Hanover was a small village of ferrymen and fishermen that became a comparatively large town in the 13th century.
The philatelic history of Hannover dates from 1850, the year before the death of King Ernest, with 1gutengrochen stamp being the first stamp issued in 1850. Within less than a decade, the stamps with the face value in Thaler were suspended and replaced with brand new series.
A brand new series of definitive German States stamps for the Kingdom of Hannover was introduced, beginning in 1859. Among the set of 6 stamps, one stamp is really distinct. While other stamps feature the left facing portrait of King George V of Hannover, the only unique stamp of the set with the face value of ½Groschen bears a crown over a posthorn which possibly could be a royal emblem.
In 1866, the German States stamps for the Kingdom of Hannover were replaced by those of the Kingdom of Prussia, and later by those of the North German Postal Union.
