First Bavarian Stamps

Bavaria is a small state that shares its borders with Austria, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland. Bavarian stamps are parallel to the rich and turbulent history of the Kingdom from 1849 through 1920. In many ways, stamps of Bavaria reflect the political and social changes occurring during this period.Known as numeral issues, the first stamps of Bavaria were 1st November 1849. The stamps were issued with three denomination 1Kreuzer, 3Kreuzer and 6Kruezer. The 1 Kr. postage stamps are imperforate and it was printed on normal paper without security threads. The stamp depicts numeral 1 in the centre flanked by Ein and Kreuzer on the left and right side and Bayern and Franco at top and bottom.
The two additional denominated stamps were the 3 Kr. and the 6 Kr stamps. The 3Kruezer stamp is sky blue in colour and depicts numeral 3 in the centre flanked by Drei and Kreuzer on left and right side and Bayern and Franco at top and bottom. The 6Kruezer stamp is Brown in colour and depicts numeral 6 in the centre flanked by Seche and Kreuzer on left and right side and Bayern and Franco at top and bottom.
With these issues the Kingdom of Bavaria the distinction of being only the 11th country in the World to issue adhesive stamps for the prepayment of letter postage.
