Rabindranath Tagore was born in Calcutta into a wealthy Brahmin family. He was the son of Debendranath Tagore, a leader of the Brahmo Samaj.Rabindranath Tagore is also known as Rabi Thakur. He was a Bengali Philosopher, poet, short-story writer, song composer, play writer, essayist and a painter. Rabindranath Tagore was the first Indian to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in the year 1913. He has also played an important role in the Renaissance of modern India.
He has composed around 2000 songs which are popularised and sung widely across Bengal. Indian National Anthem ‘Jana Gana Mana’ is composed by him, not only these, but he has also composed the National Anthem of Bangladesh ‘Amar Shonar Bangla’.
On the occasion of the150th Anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, the Indian government had issued 5 Rupee Commemorative coins on 9th May 2010. The obverse of this coin is inscribed with the portrait of Rabindranath Tagore in the centre and the inscription ‘Rabindranath Tagore 150 Wi Jayanti’ in Devnagari and ‘Rabindranath Tagore 150 Birth Anniversary’ in Roman at the top and bottom, Date ‘1861-2011’ written at the bottom. The reverse of the coin depicts ‘Ashoka’s Lion with numerical ‘5’ at the bottom with an inscription ‘Bharat Rupaye’ in Devnagari and ‘Indian Rupee’ to the left and right side.
