The Freistadt Danzig (Free City of Danzig) was originally part of Germany. According to the Treaty of Versailles, this geographic region, formerly part of East Prussia in the German Empire, was to remain separated from Weimar Germany and from the new Republic of Poland. The Freistadt Danzig (Free City of Danzig) was proclaimed by the League of Nations on November 15, 1920.The first postage stamps of the Freistadt Danzig were issued in 1920. They originally belonged to the Weimar Republic and were overprinted and / or surcharged. The first indigenous stamps of the state came on 31st January 1921.
The stamps were issued in order to celebrate the new constitution of the Freistadt Danzig. The designs feature a Hanseatic Trading Ship, symbolizing the historical importance of the port city of Danzig as a major Baltic Sea trading centre.
A total of 10 stamps were issued out of which 5 stamps had the value in ‘pfennige’ and the other five came with the denomination of ‘mark’. The 25 Pf., 40 Pf., and 80 Pf. denomination stamps from this set were re-issued on March 11, 1921.
