Lost in the pages of history the incredible woman Jhalkari Bai, was a women soldier who played an important role in the Indian Rebellion of 1857. She served in the women’s army of Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi.Born into a Koli family on 22nd November 1830, she eventually rose to a position of a prominent advisor to the legendary, Rani of Jhansi. At the height of the battle of the fort of Jhansi, she disguised herself as the Queen and fought on her behalf, on the front, allowing the Queen to escape safely out of the fort. This led to a confusion that continued for a whole day and gave the Rani's army renewed advantage.
Tales of her bravery continue to be told in various households in Jhansi. The postal department of India released a stamp to pay tribute to a warrior who lived and died defending her people and her country.
