Tehri Garhwal merged with the Indian Union

The meaning of Garhwal is ‘country of forts’. It was a Princely State ruled by a Garhwali Rajput dynasty in the northwestern Uttarakhand of India. This state was ruled by three dynasties, Katyuri dynasty, Chand dynasty and Shah Dynasty. During British Raj, it came under the authority of ‘Punjab Hill States Agency’.Garhwal is situated currently in the Tehri Garhwal and Uttarkashi district. It was merged with the Union of India on July 1949.
The above shown silver Timasha was issued by Lallat Shah of Garhwal Princely State from Srinagar mint. The coin was minted in the name of Shah Alam II. It shows a Persian legend on its both sides which read as ‘Sikka Mubarak Badshah Gazi Shah Alam’ and ‘Zarb Srinagar Sanah 1189 Julus Mainamat Manus’.
