Famous 17th-Century Painter Artemisia Gentileschi Remembered on Italian Coins

The Italian Mint released a new gold coin with a face value of 20 euros. It is a part of the Le Donne nell’Arte series and is dedicated to the brilliant artist Artemisia Gentileschi who was known for her courageous attitude and determination. Her 17th-century Baroque art showcase colours, lights, and shadows that were inspired by Italian painter Caravaggio.Engraver artist Maria Angela Cassol designed the coin. 1,200 proof coins have been released. The reverse features the self-portrait of Artemisia Gentileschi. She is depicted as a lute player wearing a turban and the original painting is showcased at Wadsworth Atheneum Museum, Hartford, US. Other inscriptions include “ITALIAN REPUBLIC”, decorative elements and the author’s name “CASSOL”.
The reverse features parts of a painting called Judith and the maiden with the head of Holofernes. The original painting is showcased at the Palatine Gallery, Palace Pitti, Florence. Other inscriptions include “WOMEN IN ART” and “ARTEMISIA GENTILESCHI”; “R” for Mint of Rome, “20 EURO” and the year of issue “2018”.
