Gold Dinar of Rashtrakutas

In the upcoming auction of the Classical Numismatic Gallery, the gold dinar of King Govinda III of Rashtrakuta is bided for the estimated price from INR 12,00,000 to 15,00,000.King Govinda III is also known as the Prabhutavarsha Pratapavaloka Jagattunga. The title ‘Jagatunga’ is held by more than one Rashtrakuta rulers, but this title is more fitting for Govinda III, due to his military victory against the Pratiharas of Kannauj, the Palas of Bengal, the Eastern Chalukyas of Vengi and the Pallavas of Kanchi.
This gold dinar of King Govinda III weights around 4.8g. The obverse of this coin depicts the figure of a king mounted on the horse riding towards left with a curved sword raised in the hand with pseudo-Arabic inscription around it. The reverse of this coin the pseudo –Arabic inscriptions is featured on the margin with two line in proto Nagri/kutila script in the centre, which reads ‘Shri JagatungaAprati / hata Shata Garudadhwaja’. A row of auspicious Vasishnavite symbols like lotus, kalasha and Sankha is seen above the inscription, below the inscription a half lotus pedestal in supporting the legend.
