Horse on Sangam Chera Coin

A horse is always considered as one of the most fascinating creatures in the entire world. In the ancient times, it used to consider as the fastest meant of transport. They also used to play an important role in warfare and in agriculture. In the ancient age, kings used to perform ‘Ashvamedhya Yagna’ to prove imperial sovereignty.This copper coin has an image of a horse belonging to the Chera from the Sangam age. Sangam Age was the glorious period from 300 BCE to 300 CE in South India. The powerful dynasties like Chera, Chola, and Pandya were part of the Sangam Period.
The Cheras were one of the three famous ruling kingdoms of the Sangam age. This kingdom had ruled the parts of today’s Kerala and Tamiham.
The obverse of this coin depicts the image of ‘Horse facing towards right’ and the reverse of this coin depicts the image of ‘Bow and arrow’ with Ankushi’.
