Transcaucasian Republic Definitive Stamps
2018-07-05 Thu
Between 1922 and 1991 Armenia was initially part of the Transcaucasian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic which officially became the Armenian SSR in 1936. It was a constituent republic of the Soviet Union, which embraced Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. The Transcaucasian SFSR was separated from Russia by the Caucasus Mountains, hence they were known as the Transcaucasian Republics.Prior to 1923, Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan issued postage stamps as separate entities. The first issue for the Transcaucasian SFSR proper was the 1923 eight stamp. The stamps were issued featuring two designs in values ranging from 40,000 to 500,000 rubles.
The lower denominations had an image of an oil field and oil derricks while the stamps with higher denomination feature the hammer and sickle over mountains. The stamps are inscribed ‘?????’ and ‘Post’ in Armenian, Azerbaijani, Georgian and Russian.
