The Times of India issued its first edition on 3rd November 1838 as The Bombay Times and Journal of Commerce. The paper was published on Wednesdays and Saturdays only and later from 1850 it started began to publish daily editions.In 1860 the ‘Bombay times and Journal of Commerce’ merged with rival ‘Bombay Standard’ was named as the ‘Bombay Times and Standard’. However, it was further renamed in 1861 to ‘The Times of India’ (TOI).
According to the Indian Readership Survey (IRS) 2012, the Times of India is the most widely read English newspaper in India making the top ranking English daily in India.
On 3rd, November 2013 TOI completed 175 years in print! India post issued an INR 5 50 commemorative stamp to celebrate 175th anniversary of TOI. Also in 1988 an INR 1.50 commemorative stamp was issued celebrating 150 years of TOI.
